From 1955 to 1957, she played the central character of Empress Elisabeth of Austria in the Austrian Sissi trilogy. Schneider moved to France where she made successful and critically acclaimed films with some of the most notable film directors of that era.

She also portrayed those characters in her highly successful one-woman show on Broadway in 1979. In addition to performing in a movie version of her Broadway show directed by Mike Nichols, she worked as a comic actress in five other feature films, though none was a hit at the box office.
