Barack Hussein Obama II is an American politician who served as the 44th President of the United States from 2009 to 2017. The first African American to assume the presidency, he was previously the junior United States Senator from Illinois from 2005 to 2008. He served in the Illinois State Senate from 1997 until 2004.
Barbara Ann Mikulski is an American politician who served as a United States Senator from Maryland from 1987 to 2017. In January 2017, Mikulski joined Johns Hopkins University as a professor of public policy and adviser to university President Ronald J. Daniels. A member of the Democratic Party, she also served in the United States House of Representatives from 1977 to 1987. She is the longest-serving woman in the history of the United States Congress and is the longest-serving senator in Maryland history.

John Gilbert "Jack" Layton PC was a Canadian politician and Leader of the Official Opposition. He was leader of the New Democratic Party from 2003 to 2011, and previously sat on Toronto City Council, occasionally holding the title of acting mayor or deputy mayor of Toronto during his tenure as city councillor. He was the Member of Parliament for Toronto—Danforth from 2004 until his death.
