Thome spent most of his career with the Cleveland Indians , anchoring a core of players that led the franchise to two World Series appearances in three years during the mid-1990s. Thome also had stints with the Philadelphia Phillies , Chicago White Sox , and three other teams. Initially a third baseman, Thome transitioned to first base and, later in his career, became a designated hitter.
