He was selected to start for the Western Conference in the NBA All-Star Game eight times, and was named to the All-NBA Team five times. At the time of his final season, he was the tallest active player in the NBA, at 2.29 m . He is the only player outside of the United States to lead the NBA in All-Star voting.

Russell Marion Nelson Sr. is an American religious leader and former surgeon who is the 17th and current president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints . Nelson was a member of the LDS Church's Quorum of the Twelve Apostles for nearly 34 years, and was its president from 2015 to 2018. Church president Thomas S. Monson's death in January 2018 left the 93-year-old Nelson as the most senior apostle by years of service and thus the presumptive new church president. He was ordained on January 14, 2018. As church president, Nelson is accepted by the church as a prophet, seer, and revelator.
